Things to Remember about Reading to an Infant
|
|---|
It's the sound of your voice that matters: Use pleasant and steady tones
|
It's not like reading to older kids: It's ok if they are sleeping or trying to eat the book! They are also hearing the language and that's what matters.
|
It's about quantity: You don't have to have a ton of books, just make reading a habit even if it's the same book over and over.
|
It's easy and cheap: Many libraries have a great selection of board books or even song books which are a great choice for an infant

Tips For Choosing a Baby's Books

Did you know that by 6 months of age a baby can already recognize patterns and distinctions in speech (these will later turn into the skills necessary to be successful in phonics and reading)? By 1 year of age a baby's brain has nearly doubled in size and many of the learning pathways are either forming strong connections or already showing gaps. If these statistics aren't motivating enough, here are 5 reasons why you must read to your BABY regularly:
1. Reading to a baby allows the neurons in their brain to connect.
2. Connected brain neurons begin to form strong learning pathways which allow information to flow smoothly through the brain.
3. Reading forms a bond of trust and common language between a baby and parent.
4. Reading builds a baby's ability to focus on and attend to language.
5. Reading to a baby allows the brain to begin processing and distinguishing the rhythm of language which will lead to more success in learning to read and a larger vocabulary as they begin to speak. (I love that the research for this point came from the University of Nebraska!)
These are my 5 Favorite Books to Read to My Babies. We have read many of them so many times that we are on our second copy of the book. The Going to Bed Book is our VERY favorite, we are on our 4th copy and my bigger girls still choose it! Enjoy!

These are wonderful suggestions. I read with my children long after they learned to read on their own. We always set aside a certain amount of time each day and it was something we all looked forward to.
From the time I found out I was expecting my son, I started to collect Ladybird books to read to him. I loved them as a child and Ladybird books still offer all the old classics as well as newer titles.
I started reading to him from a baby and did the same with my daughter. Your child or baby is never too young to be read to, it's a fun way for you to interact with your baby and they do grow up learning to appreciate books and language.
We still have a book shelf full of Ladybird books, which sadly the children have long outgrown, but we will hang onto them.Who knows one day they may have children of their own and want to read some of their old books to them.
Your hub offers good advice for anyone wanting to read to their babies and children. Thank you.
Very good suggestions. I love them
I didn't start reading to my son until about 2 but my daughter is 9 months and we are going to start reading to her now thanks to this hub!
