When my middle girl decided she wanted a princess themed birthday party, I was a touch overwhelmed. True, I have 3 daughters, but this was to be our first princess party and she had huge expectations! We made a list and got busy planning. The party was fairly easy to manage, my sweet husband got a touch overwhelmed by all those giggling girls, and a ton of fun. Enjoy!

The Food

We decided to have an evening party so we served dinner. My thoughts were to have princess themed food. My original menu was:

Princess Sandwiches: A variety of sandwich options such as peanut butter and jelly, ham and cheese and turkey served on bread cut with a cookie cutter in the shape of a crown.

Crown Fruit: Made by laying a carrot on the bottom, a half of a strawberry pointy side up in the middle and two grapes on the end. I wanted to have these on the plate for the girls to snack on as they arrived.

Royal Yogurt: Strawberry yogurt served in clear plastic cups, the small size, and topped with pink decorators sugar to make it pretty and royal.

I made up a practice plate and showed my girl. She loved it and ate it happily for lunch, then announced that she really wanted pizza for her party! We had pizza on lovely princess plates and a fancy table cloth and she was thrilled. (She has big plans to use the princess food for a royal tea party in the near future.)

The Craft

We decided to give each girl a tiara and a wand as a favor. We used the wands for games so they didn't get those until near in end of the party. We set the tiaras on their plate so they got them and put them on right away. After we ate, we cleared the table and let the girls make a princess purse. I used cloth bags in pink and fun foam stickers along with fabric markers. Because of the staining nature of fabric markers I would not suggest you use them with a large group or kids you don't know well. We had a small party and I knew the kids well enough to know who to really help. We just passed out the bags and plates of stickers and let the girls decorate. They had so much fun with this simple craft and they all got a cool bag to carry their tiara and wand home in.

The Games

My girl loves to play games so the games were her favorite part of the party. We played them one after another and then I left the supplies out so the girls could play them again after cake. The most important thing to remember is to do all the prep work ahead of time and have all the supplies ready to go in the place you'll be playing.

Pin the Crown on the Princess: My husband is a great artist so he drew a princess poster and we put our girl's face in the middle. If making your own poster doesn't work, you can always buy a poster and cover the face with a picture of your girl. I did enlarge the picture so it would fill more of the face. We used a package of paper crowns and masking tape. Simply blindfold the first girl, I used a dishtowel and pony tail holder for this, spin her around and hand her a crown to tape on. The girls giggled their way through this game cheering each other on. Fun and really easy and inexpensive to set up.

Princess Race: You'll need two teams for this. Each team will need a dress, crown, purse and necklace. You could use whatever you want for the outfit just make sure you have the same number and kind of pieces for each team. I used dresses from our dress up box that I knew would be a bit big for the girls so they could get them on and off easily. Place the outfit at one end of the playing area and your teams in a line at the other. When you say go the first two players race to the other end and dress in the princess outfit. Once dressed they run back to their line, high five each team member and run back down to take the outfit off. Once it is off they join the end of the line and the next player goes. The first team to have all their players finish wins.

Wonderful Wands: This game is so easy you just need a wand and a balloon per girl and some fun music. I did use princess balloons and a princess cd for the music. The idea is to use the wand to keep your balloon in the air the whole time the music is playing. You can only use the wand, no body parts to keep the balloon up. When the music stops you can catch your balloon and take a break. We played that if you drop the balloon, just pick it up and start again, but if you want a winner then have the girls sit when their balloon falls. They loved this and played it many more times throughout the evening.

*Just a note of caution if you have a baby as we do, be really careful with the balloons as they can be a choking hazard.*

Princess Freeze Dance: This was my personal favorite. The girls were so cute and so excited. Each girl dances her heart out wearing her tiara and waving her wand. When the music stops she freezes in whatever position she happens to be in until the music starts again. We played lots of rounds using the princess cd mentioned earlier. The girls loved dancing and eventually took turns running the music as well.

Four fun games that got everyone involved and put the giggly energy to good use. After games they were more than ready to head to the kitchen for a drink and some cake.

The Cake

My girl went really easy on me. She saw the princess candle set and wanted that immediately. She picked icing and wording color as well as the cake flavor and we were good to go. I decorated the cake on a purple tray we had to make it a bit fancier. I would recommend waiting to put the candles and picks on until you are almost ready to serve it as they are pretty heavy.

Turns out my worry was completely unnecessary. A princess party is a totally enjoyable party to plan and a great experience for the birthday princess and her friends alike.
